The Story of Joplin, Missouri

In honor of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, volunteers from New York Says Thank You Foundation and Groesbeck Rebuilds America traveled to Joplin, Missouri, a town destroyed by an EF-5 multiple vortex tornado, to paint and plant 3,187 Stars of HOPE—one for each of the approximate 3,000 persons killed in the 9/11 terror attacks and one for each of the 187 persons killed during the May 22nd, 2011 tornado that ravaged Joplin. Throughout the course of the 9/11 Anniversary weekend, Joplin residents, local first responders, veterans, school children, and college students and staff from Missouri Southern State University painted the 3,187 Stars, which were then planted by New York Says Thank You and Groesbeck Rebuilds America volunteers throughout Joplin. The Stars remain on the street corners of the city as a lasting reminder that we will never forget not only what happened on September 11th, 2001, but also on May 22nd, 2011. This star from Joplin became the symbol for Stars of HOPE.
